In the heart of New Mexico, where the desert meets the mountains, Jamaul Simpson crafts more than just knives—he creates heirlooms. Each blade that leaves his forge carries the weight of tradition and the spark of innovation.
"Every piece of steel has its own personality," Jamaul often says. "My job is to listen to what it wants to become, then guide it there with patience, fire, and skill."
From hunting knives that will accompany adventurers into the wilderness, to chef knives that will create countless meals for families, each creation is a testament to the enduring art of bladesmithing.
"At Gentle Bear Knifeworks, we believe that a knife is more than a tool—it's an extension of the craftsman's soul. Every hammer strike, every heat treatment, every polish is performed with intention and respect for the materials.
We don't mass-produce. We don't cut corners. We create blades that will outlive their owners, carrying stories and memories in their steel."
Hand-forging techniques passed down through generations of master smiths, ensuring each blade carries the wisdom of centuries.
Only the finest steels and handle materials make the cut, sourced from trusted suppliers who share our commitment to quality.
Every knife is made to order, with attention to the specific needs and preferences of the individual who will wield it.
From raw steel to finished masterpiece, every step is performed with precision and care.
The journey begins with heating the steel to 2200°F in a propane forge. This critical first step transforms the molecular structure of the metal, making it malleable and ready to be shaped. Temperature control is crucial—too hot and the steel burns, too cool and it won't move properly under the hammer.
With the steel glowing orange-hot, it's time for the rhythmic dance of hammer and anvil. Each strike is deliberate, slowly drawing out the blade's profile and establishing the basic geometry. This is where experience truly matters—knowing how the steel moves, understanding the grain structure, and feeling the right moment to reheat.
Once the basic shape is forged, the blade moves to the grinder. Here, precision takes over from brute force. The edge geometry is carefully established, the spine is refined, and the blade's final dimensions are set. Multiple grits of abrasive are used, from coarse shaping to fine finishing, each revealing more of the blade's character.
While the blade undergoes heat treatment, attention turns to the handle. Whether it's desert ironwood, micarta, or stag horn, each material is carefully selected for beauty and function. The handle is shaped to fit the hand perfectly, sanded to a silky smoothness, and finished with oils or resins that will protect it for generations.
The blade receives its final heat treatment—a carefully controlled heating and cooling process that gives the steel its optimal hardness and toughness. After tempering to relieve stress, the blade is polished to reveal its true beauty. The Gentle Bear logo is engraved, the handle is fitted and secured, and the knife receives its final sharpening. What emerges is not just a tool, but a work of functional art.
Understanding the materials that make exceptional blades.
High-carbon steel known for excellent edge retention and toughness. Perfect for hunting and survival knives that need to hold up to heavy use.
Versatile high-carbon steel with excellent wear resistance and edge stability. Great for everyday carry and utility knives.
Nickel-alloy steel with excellent toughness and corrosion resistance. Often used in Damascus patterns for contrast and durability.
Pattern-welded steel combining multiple layers for superior strength and stunning visual appeal. Each pattern is unique and hand-forged.
From traditional woods to modern composites, each material offers unique characteristics.
Dense, durable wood with beautiful grain patterns. Naturally water-resistant and ages to a deep patina.
Natural antler material providing excellent grip even when wet. Each piece is unique in texture and color.
Layered fabric and resin composite that's virtually indestructible. Available in various colors and textures.
